Kids can lift it from time to time to see the evaporation happening. A little risky using the hot water but I think it will be worth the risk. I am going to have the kids wear kitchen mits or rubber gloves to protect their skin. Just a way to have older kids see ans experience the world around us. Allow the cotton to fill up with water and talk about how real clouds fill up with water. Then lift the cotton up and allow the water to rain down. When clouds fill up with water and get heavy, the rain will fall! I hope you have fun with it tomorrow.
